Binaural beats are the most-studied case: a 2018 meta-analysis of 22 studies found a modest benefit for attention, anxiety and pain, while a 2023 review found the underlying brainwave-"entrainment" effect inconsistent.[3]

The best meditation music is the music that relaxes you — your nervous system doesn't read the label. A few practical filters:

  • Match it to the goal. Winding down or sleep: slow, dark, drifting ambient or delta/theta tracks. Focus or study: steady alpha or beta material with minimal variation. Emotional release: singing bowls or chant.
  • No lyrics for deep practice. Words recruit the language brain and pull you out.
  • Avoid tracks that "build." Crescendos and drops are designed to grab attention — the opposite of what you want.
